The Canary Islands quail (Coturnix gomerae) was a type of quail that is now extinct. This means it no longer lives anywhere on Earth. It used to live on several islands in the Canary Islands, which are part of Spain. These islands included El Hierro, La Palma, Tenerife, and Fuerteventura.
Why Did It Disappear?
Scientists believe the Canary Islands quail was still around when people first came to the islands. Sadly, it disappeared sometime after that. One big reason for its extinction might have been the arrival of cats. Cats are good hunters and could have easily caught small, ground-dwelling birds like this quail.
