Cane Hollow facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Cane Hollow is a small valley located in Douglas County, in the southern part of Missouri. This area is part of a beautiful region known as the Ozarks, which is famous for its rolling hills, forests, and many streams. A valley is a low area of land between hills or mountains, often with a river or stream flowing through it.

What is Cane Hollow?

Cane Hollow is more than just a dip in the land; it's a natural area with its own unique stream. This stream doesn't flow all the time. It's called an intermittent stream, which means it only flows after rain or when snow melts. This type of stream is fed by a spring, which is a natural flow of water from underground.

Where is Cane Hollow Located?

Cane Hollow is found in the heart of the Ozarks. The very beginning of the hollow, where its stream starts, is called the headwaters. You can find these headwaters at coordinates 36°54′51″N 92°26′57″W / 36.91417°N 92.44917°W / 36.91417; -92.44917. This starting point is just south of County Road C-224, west of Missouri Route C.

The stream then travels south-southwest, eventually turning southwest. It flows alongside Missouri Route 14 for a while. The stream's journey ends when it meets a larger body of water.

The Stream of Cane Hollow

The point where the Cane Hollow stream joins another stream is called a confluence. For Cane Hollow, this meeting point is with Bryant Creek. This confluence happens at coordinates 36°53′12″N 92°28′12″W / 36.88667°N 92.47000°W / 36.88667; -92.47000.

Right before it joins Bryant Creek, the stream in Cane Hollow flows under Route 14. It then enters Bryant Creek just south of the Route 14 bridge. This area is also very close to a part of the Rippee State Wildlife Management Area, which is a special place for nature and wildlife.

How Cane Hollow Got Its Name

The name "Cane Hollow" tells us something interesting about the valley's past. It was named because the valley used to have a lot of "cane." This refers to a dense growth of tall, grass-like plants, similar to bamboo, which is called a canebrake. Imagine a thick forest of these cane plants covering the valley floor!
