Caner Erkin (born 4 October 1988) is a Turkish professional footballer. He plays as a left-back for the Süper Lig club Eyüpspor.
Caner Erkin's Football Journey
Starting His Career
Caner Erkin began his professional football career in the 2004–05 season. He played for Manisaspor, which was in the Second Division at the time. That season, his team won the league and moved up to the Süper Lig, Turkey's top football league.
During his time at Manisaspor, he scored 5 goals in 39 games. In January 2007, he moved to CSKA Moscow in Russia. He played 40 games there, including 7 in the UEFA Champions League, a big European club competition. He also won the Russian Super Cup twice with CSKA Moscow. In August 2009, Galatasaray signed Erkin for a one-year loan. A loan means a player plays for a different team for a set time, but still belongs to their original club.
Playing for Big Clubs
Fenerbahçe Years
In 2010, Caner Erkin joined Fenerbahçe, another major Turkish club. He started as a left winger, which is an attacking player on the side of the field. Over time, he changed his position to a left-back. This is a defensive player who also helps with attacks down the side. His strong performances at Fenerbahçe caught the eye of many big European clubs. In 2014, he signed a new two-year contract with Fenerbahçe.
Time at Inter Milan
On 1 June 2016, Inter Milan, a famous Italian club, announced they had signed Erkin. He joined them for free, meaning no transfer fee was paid. This deal was for three years, starting on 1 July. Caner was the first new player to join Inter Milan that summer. He played in seven friendly matches before the season started. However, he did not play in any official games for Inter Milan before leaving on 30 August.
Loan to Beşiktaş
On 30 August 2016, Inter Milan announced that Erkin would join Beşiktaş on a one-year loan. Beşiktaş is another big club in Turkey.
Joining Beşiktaş Permanently
On 7 June 2017, Beşiktaş officially signed Caner Erkin. He scored an important goal for Beşiktaş on 23 August 2019, helping his team win 3–0 against Göztepe S.K.. He left Beşiktaş at the end of the 2019–20 Süper Lig season.
Return to Fenerbahçe
On 6 August 2020, Caner Erkin signed a two-year deal to return to Fenerbahçe. He had spent four years at Beşiktaş, on the other side of Istanbul. In his first game back on 11 September, he helped his teammate Gökhan Gönül score a goal. However, on 4 August 2021, Fenerbahçe announced that he would not be part of the team for the next season. This was a decision made by the team's manager, Vitor Pereira.
Later Career Moves
- On 6 September 2021, Fatih Karagümrük signed Erkin. He joined them as a free agent, which means he was not under contract with any team at that time.
- On 28 January 2023, Erkin signed a contract with İstanbul Başakşehir.
- On 11 July 2023, Erkin moved to Eyüpspor, a team in the Turkish Second Division. He joined them as a free agent as well.
Playing for Turkey
Caner Erkin made his first appearance for the Turkey national football team when he was only 17 years old. This was in a friendly match against Ghana in May 2006. His first goal for Turkey was against Ukraine on 5 June 2012.
