The Canet River is a river in Quebec, Canada. It flows into Matagami Lake. This lake is part of a bigger river system. The Canet River flows through the area of Eeyou Istchee Baie-James (municipality). This region is in Nord-du-Québec.
The Canet River flows through forests and marshy areas. It is mostly east of Lake Matagami. The river's path is quite flat. Roads for transport to James Bay are important in this area. The river usually freezes over from early December until late April.
If you travel from Matagami, the James Bay road first goes between Olga Lake and the Canet River. Then, the road turns north. It crosses the Canet River in the middle. After that, it continues north, passing west of Poncheville Lake.

Where Does the Canet River Start and End?
The Canet River begins in a marshy area. This starting point is about 274 metres (899 ft) above sea level. This source is located 48.7 kilometres (30.3 mi) southeast of Matagami town. It is also 14.1 kilometres (8.8 mi) northeast of where the Canet River meets Lake Matagami.
The river's source is located:
- North of the area that drains into Olga Lake. The Waswanipi River flows through Olga Lake.
- South of the area that drains into Poncheville Lake. Water from Poncheville Lake flows north to the Broadback River.

How Does the Canet River Flow?
From its source, the Canet River flows for about 30.7 kilometres (19.1 mi). It generally moves towards the southwest. Along its path, the river sometimes widens.
The Canet River ends in a bay on the eastern side of Lake Matagami. The lake is 271 metres (889 ft) above sea level. This bay connects to another bay. That second bay is where the Waswanipi River joins. The Waswanipi River flows through Olga Lake.
Lake Matagami then flows out to the northwest. Its water goes into the Nottaway River. The Nottaway River eventually flows into the southeastern part of James Bay.
The place where the Canet River meets Lake Matagami is important. It is 23.3 kilometres (14.5 mi) southeast of the main outlet of Lake Matagami. It is also 33.8 kilometres (21.0 mi) northeast of downtown Matagami.

The name "Canet River" became official on December 5, 1968. This happened when the Commission de toponymie du Quebec was first created. This commission is in charge of naming places in Quebec.
