The Chensagi River begins at a lake called Gray Pine Lake. This lake is about 2.2 kilometres (1.4 mi) long and sits at an altitude of 332 metres (1,089 ft). Eight smaller mountain lakes feed water into Gray Pine Lake.
The starting point of the river is located:

- About 73.5 kilometres (45.7 mi) northeast of Goéland Lake.
- About 119 kilometres (74 mi) northeast of the town of Matagami.
The River's Journey
The Chensagi River flows for about 99.1 kilometres (61.6 mi). Its journey can be divided into three main parts:
Upper Course
The first part of the river's journey is about 30.7 kilometres (19.1 mi) long. It flows mostly northwest, making a curve to the southwest. Along this path, it meets a small stream coming from the north. It then continues southwest, meeting another creek from the east.
Middle Course
The middle part of the Chensagi River is about 36.3 kilometres (22.6 mi) long. In this section, the river flows west, then southwest, meeting several creeks along the way. It joins with the Chensagi River East and later with the Chensagi River West. Finally, it flows into the eastern side of Chensagi Lake.
Lower Course
The last part of the river's journey is about 32.1 kilometres (19.9 mi) long. The river flows southwest through Chensagi Lake, which is about 14.4 kilometres (8.9 mi) long. After leaving the lake, it flows southeast, widening as it goes, and meets Frederique Creek. The river then continues south for a short distance before reaching its end.
Where the River Ends
The Chensagi River empties into the northwest part of Maicasagi Lake. From there, the water flows southwest through a narrow passage called Max Passage into Goéland Lake. The Waswanipi River then flows through Goéland Lake towards the northwest.
The end of the Chensagi River is located:
- About 10.9 kilometres (6.8 mi) north of where Maicasagi Lake ends.
- About 24.4 kilometres (15.2 mi) northeast of where Goéland Lake ends.
- About 65.7 kilometres (40.8 mi) northwest of the village of Waswanipi.
- About 72.3 kilometres (44.9 mi) north of the center of Matagami.
Naming the River
The word "toponymy" means the study of place names. The name "Chensagi River" was officially recognized on December 5, 1968. This happened when the Commission de toponymie du Québec (Quebec's Place Names Commission) was created.
