The Chensagi River West is a river in Quebec, Canada. It is a tributary, which means it's a smaller river that flows into a larger one. The Chensagi River West flows into the Chensagi River.
This river is located in the Eeyou Istchee Baie-James (municipality) area of northern Quebec. Part of the river flows through a place called the Dambourges township.
People can reach the river using secondary roads from Matagami. One road runs along the west side, and another forest road is on the east side. The river's surface usually freezes over from early November until mid-May. However, it's safest to walk or travel on the ice from mid-November to mid-April.

Where Does the Chensagi River West Flow?
The Chensagi River West is part of a larger network of rivers and lakes. Here are some of the main water bodies near it:
- To the North: Opataouaga Lake, Quenosisca Lake, Rocher Lake, and the Broadback River.
- To the East: The main Chensagi River and the Chensagi River East.
- To the South: The Chensagi River, Maicasagi Lake, and the Maicasagi River.
- To the West: Height of Lands Lake, Chensagi Lake, and Poncheville Lake.
The River's Beginning
The Chensagi River West starts from a small, unnamed lake high up in the mountains. This lake is about 2.1 kilometers (1.3 miles) long and sits at an altitude of 287 meters (942 feet) above sea level.
The starting point of the river is:
- About 5.9 kilometers (3.7 miles) southeast of Opataouaga Lake.
- About 92.2 kilometers (57.3 miles) north of the town of Matagami.
The River's Journey
From its source lake, the Chensagi River West flows for about 48.4 kilometers (30.1 miles). Along its path, it winds through the landscape and even widens into several small lakes.
Here's how the river flows:
- It starts by flowing northeast, winding its way and passing through a lake.
- Then it continues northeast, crossing another lake.
- Next, it turns south, meeting a small creek.
- It then flows southwest, joining another creek.
- Finally, it travels south through five lakes that are formed by the river getting wider. It then enters the Dambourges township before reaching its end.
Where the River Ends
The Chensagi River West flows into the north bank of the main Chensagi River. The Chensagi River then generally flows southwest, going through Chensagi Lake and into a bay on the northwest side of Maicasagi Lake.
From there, Maicasagi Lake flows southwest through a narrow passage called Max Passage. This passage leads to Goéland Lake, which is then crossed by the Waswanipi River as it flows northwest.
The mouth, or end, of the Chensagi River West is located:
- About 15.1 kilometers (9.4 miles) north of where the main Chensagi River ends.
- About 84.4 kilometers (52.4 miles) northeast of downtown Matagami.
Naming the River
The name "rivière Chensagi" was officially recognized on December 5, 1968. This was the same day the Commission de toponymie du Québec (Quebec Toponymy Commission) was created. This commission is responsible for naming places in Quebec.
