The Maicasagi River is a cool river in Quebec, Canada. It flows into Maicasagi Lake. This river is found in the Eeyou Istchee Baie-James municipality, which is in the Nord-du-Québec region.
A road called R1018 helps people reach the river. This road crosses the Maicasagi River about 4.2 kilometres (2.6 mi) from where it ends. The river usually freezes over from early November until mid-May. However, it's safest to travel on the ice from mid-November to mid-April.

Where Does the Maicasagi River Flow?
The Maicasagi River is surrounded by many other lakes and rivers. Knowing these helps us understand its journey.
- North of the river: Yapuouichi Lake, Caupichigau Lake, Monsan River, and Chensagi River.
- East of the river: Omo River, La Trêve River, and Caupichigau River.
- South of the river: Waswanipi River, Lake Waswanipi, Inconnue River (Maicasagi River), and Nomans River.
- West of the river: Maicasagi Lake, Goéland Lake (Waswanipi River), and Waswanipi River.
The River's Starting Point
The Maicasagi River begins at a lake called Caminscanane Lake. This lake is 11.0 kilometres (6.8 mi) long and 2.25 kilometres (1.40 mi) wide. It sits at an altitude of 332 metres (1,089 ft) above sea level.
Caminscanane Lake gets its water from four lakes to the north, including Morain Lake. It also gets water from two lakes to the south.
The start of the Maicasagi River (the mouth of Caminscanane Lake) is located:
- 64.5 kilometres (40.1 mi) Northeast of where the Maicasagi River ends in Maicasagi Lake.
- 138.5 kilometres (86.1 mi) North of the town of Matagami.
The Maicasagi River travels a total of 152.2 kilometres (94.6 mi) from Caminscanane Lake to Maicasagi Lake.
The River's Journey: Upper Course
The first part of the Maicasagi River's journey is about 23.4 kilometres (14.5 mi) long.
- It flows 10.7 kilometres (6.6 mi) east, then winds south.
- It crosses an unnamed lake (at 329 metres (1,079 ft) altitude) for 6.8 kilometres (4.2 mi).
- It then flows through Lake Moquachéa (6.5 kilometres (4.0 mi) long, at 327 metres (1,073 ft) altitude) for 5.9 kilometres (3.7 mi).
The River's Journey: Middle Course
The middle part of the river is about 50.2 kilometres (31.2 mi) long.
- It flows 8.5 kilometres (5.3 mi) south, winding along.
- It then goes 9.5 kilometres (5.9 mi) southeast to meet a lake's outlet.
- It winds southeast for 11.9 kilometres (7.4 mi) to the northwest shore of Lake Monsan.
- It crosses Lake Monsan (5.8 kilometres (3.6 mi) long, at 323 metres (1,060 ft) altitude) for 4.7 kilometres (2.9 mi).
- It flows 11.7 kilometres (7.3 mi) south, then southeast, winding to a small stream.
- Finally, it goes 3.9 kilometres (2.4 mi) south to meet the Omo River.
The River's Journey: Lower Course
The last part of the Maicasagi River's journey is the longest, at 78.6 kilometres (48.8 mi).
- It flows 2.9 kilometres (1.8 mi) southwest to meet a stream.
- It then goes 14.9 kilometres (9.3 mi) southwest to meet the La Trève River.
- It turns west for 26.4 kilometres (16.4 mi) to meet another stream.
- It flows 9.7 kilometres (6.0 mi) southwest to meet the Inconnue River (Maicasagi River).
- The river then travels 24.7 kilometres (15.3 mi) westward through the Urfe area until it reaches its end.
Where the River Ends
The Maicasagi River flows into Maicasagi Lake. From there, the water continues south through a narrow spot called Max Pass. This leads to Goéland Lake.
Goéland Lake is part of the Waswanipi River. The Waswanipi River then flows into Matagami Lake.
The end of the Maicasagi River (its mouth) is located:
- 13.8 kilometres (8.6 mi) Northeast of the mouth of Maicasagi Lake.
- 80.1 kilometres (49.8 mi) Northeast of the center of Matagami.
What's in a Name?
The name "Maicasagi River" comes from Native American languages. This name has been on maps since 1955.
The name "Maicasagi River" was officially recognized on December 5, 1968. This was the day the Commission de toponymie du Québec (Quebec's place name commission) was created.
