Chensagi Lake is a beautiful freshwater lake located in the southern part of Baie-James, in the Nord-du-Québec region of Quebec, Canada. It's a natural lake that plays an important role in the local environment and economy. The lake is part of a big network of waterways, making it a great spot for nature and outdoor activities.
Forestry, which means managing and using forests, is the main economic activity around the lake. Tourism is also important, especially because Chensagi Lake connects to a huge area of water. This includes Maicasagi Lake and Goéland Lake (Waswanipi River), which is part of the Waswanipi River.
You can reach the area around Chensagi Lake by a forest road that connects to the main road from Matagami. The lake usually freezes over from early November to mid-May. However, it's generally safe to travel on the ice from mid-November to mid-April.
About Chensagi Lake
Chensagi Lake is about 13.6 kilometers (8.5 miles) long. At its widest point, it measures 3.7 kilometers (2.3 miles) across. The lake sits at an elevation of 262 meters (860 feet) above sea level.
The Chensagi River flows right through Chensagi Lake, heading southwest. This river is also a tributary, meaning it feeds into, Maicasagi Lake. Besides the Chensagi River, two smaller streams flow into the lake from the southwest. These streams drain areas of marshland.
The water from Chensagi Lake flows out directly into Maicasagi Lake. This happens through a short, narrow channel that is actually the lower part of the Chensagi River. The exit point of the lake is located at the end of a bay on its eastern side.
