Capitanejo is a barrio, which is like a neighborhood or district, located in the municipality of Juana Díaz, Puerto Rico. In 2010, about 4,350 people lived there. It covers an area of about 18.36 square miles.
A Look Back in Time
Capitanejo, like the rest of Puerto Rico, has an interesting history. After the Spanish–American War in 1898, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This was part of a deal called the Treaty of Paris of 1898.
Becoming a U.S. Territory
Because of this treaty, Puerto Rico became an unincorporated territory of the United States. This means it's part of the U.S. but doesn't have all the same rights as a state.
Early Population Counts
Soon after, in 1899, the United States Department of War took a count of all the people in Puerto Rico. This count is called a census. They found that 1,338 people lived in the Capitanejo barrio at that time.
