Capps Creek (Shoal Creek tributary) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Capps Creek is a stream in Newton County, Missouri, about 13.4 miles (21.6 km) long. Its water flows into Shoal Creek, then the Spring River, the Neosho River, the Arkansas River, and finally the mighty Mississippi River. Capps Creek is famous for Jolly Mill Park, which is located where the old town of Jollification, Missouri used to be.

The creek is also well-known for trout fishing. It's a special "White Ribbon Trout Area" managed by the Missouri Department of Conservation. These areas are regularly stocked with rainbow and sometimes brown trout. The fishing rules are usually simple, letting anglers use different types of bait and keep up to four trout each day.

The Story of Jolly Mill

Jolly Mill and the old town of Jollification have a long history, going back to the mid-1800s. The mill was the most important part of the town. The town grew because the mill was successful at grinding grain and making other products.

Jolly Mill During the Civil War

Sadly, the town was destroyed during the Civil War. But after the war, people rebuilt it. However, the town eventually faded away when the railroad was built somewhere else, bypassing Jollification.

Jolly Mill Today

Today, Jolly Mill is looked after by groups called The Friends of Jolly Mill and The Ozark Highlanders. They manage it as a public park where families can visit and have fun. Jolly Mill is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places, which means it's an important historical site.
