Captain Beyond was an American rock supergroup formed in Los Angeles, California in 1971. A supergroup is a band made up of musicians who were already famous from other well-known bands. This group included Deep Purple singer Rod Evans, Johnny Winter drummer Bobby Caldwell, and Iron Butterfly members Larry Reinhardt (guitarist) and Lee Dorman (bassist).
The band played a mix of different music styles. Their sound combined hard rock, progressive rock, jazz fusion, and space rock. They released three albums between 1972 and 1977. Captain Beyond faced many challenges from the start. These included disagreements with their record label about their music style. Also, singer Rod Evans left and rejoined the band several times. He left for good in late 1973 after their second album came out.

The Story of Captain Beyond
Forming the Band: Early Days
The first members of Captain Beyond came together in 1971. They were Rod Evans on vocals, Bobby Caldwell on drums, Larry "Rhino" Reinhardt on guitar, and Lee Dorman on bass. They also had keyboardist Lewie Gold for a short time. Lewie Gold left the band before they recorded their first album.
The remaining four members recorded their first album, called Captain Beyond. It was released in 1972 by Capricorn Records. This record label was known for Southern rock bands like The Allman Brothers Band.
Changes and New Music
After their first album, Bobby Caldwell left the band. Brian Glascock took over on drums. The band also added keyboardist Reese Wynans and percussionist Guille Garcia. The record company's producer, Giorgio Gomelsky, wanted a different drummer. So, Brian Glascock left, and Marty Rodriguez joined on drums.
This new six-member group recorded their second album, Sufficiently Breathless, in 1973. Phil Walden, a co-founder of Capricorn Records, produced this album. During the recording, there were disagreements, and Rod Evans decided to leave the band. This caused the band to break up for a while.
Later in 1973, the original lineup with Bobby Caldwell got back together. They played concerts in the US and Canada. However, Rod Evans left the band permanently around Christmas 1973, and Captain Beyond broke up again.
Reunion and Final Albums
Captain Beyond reformed in 1976. This time, it was Caldwell, Dorman, and Rhino, joined by new singers. First, Jason Cahoon sang, and then Willy Daffern became the vocalist. They recorded the band's third album, Dawn Explosion, which came out in 1977 on Warner Bros.. The band broke up again in 1978.
Caldwell and Rhino brought Captain Beyond back together in 1998. Jimi Interval was on vocals, Dan Frye on keyboards, and Jeff Artabasy on bass. In 1999, a Swedish record label released a tribute album called Thousand Days of Yesterday. It featured other bands playing Captain Beyond songs. In 2000, Captain Beyond released a four-song EP called Night Train Calling.
Later Years and Legacy
Captain Beyond stopped playing together in 2003 because guitarist Larry Reinhardt became ill. He continued to play music after treatment but sadly passed away in 2012. Bassist Lee Dorman also passed away in 2012. Rod Evans, the original singer, retired from performing. Bobby Caldwell mentioned in 2015 that Evans was doing well and working in respiratory therapy.
Bobby Caldwell started the band again in 2013. The new members included Don Bonzi, Jeff "Boday" Christensen, Jamie Holka, Allen Carmen, and Simon Lind. In 2015, Carmen and Christensen left, and Jeff Artabasy returned as bassist. The reformed group began touring in 2015.
