Capture the Flag is a fun computer-animated movie from Spain. It's a science-fiction adventure comedy that came out in 2015. The film was directed by Enrique Gato and written by Patxi Amezcua.
This movie was special because it was the first Spanish animated film released all over the world by a big studio, Paramount Pictures. It was shown in both 3D and 2D. Even though it came out in Spain first, the movie was actually animated with English voices. Later, it was dubbed into Spanish and Catalan. The film won an award for Best Animated Film at the 2016 Goya Awards.
What is Capture the Flag About?
Meet Mike Goldwing and His Family
The story follows Mike Goldwing, a brave and determined 12-year-old boy. Mike comes from a family of NASA astronauts. His dad and grandpa were both astronauts!
Mike's grandfather, Frank Goldwing, was once a famous astronaut. But now, he lives alone in a retirement home. He missed his chance to fly to the Moon with Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin on the Apollo 11 mission. This made him feel very sad and isolated.
A Billionaire's Plan to Steal the Moon
A very rich man from Texas, named Richard Carson III, has a strange plan. He wants to fly to the Moon to steal its valuable resources. These resources are called Helium-3, which can be a powerful energy source.
Carson also wants to destroy the American flag planted on the Moon by the Apollo 11 crew. He wants to make people believe that America never went to the Moon. This way, he hopes to claim the Moon for himself!
NASA's Mission to Stop Carson
The President of the United States hears about Carson's plan. The President orders NASA to quickly plan another trip to the Moon. They must stop Carson from rewriting history. They also need to prevent him from getting Helium-3, which could be used as a dangerous weapon.
Carson finds out about NASA's new mission. He hires someone to secretly cause problems for their space flight.
Trouble at NASA
During a test flight, Carson's saboteur (the person causing trouble) pretends to be a cameraman. He secretly opens a fuel door, emptying the test lander's fuel. This causes the lander to crash, and Mike's father, Scott, gets hurt.
Mike and his friends, Marty and Amy, are safe. But Scott blames his father, Frank, for the accident. He thinks Frank didn't refuel the tank. This makes the family's problems even worse.
Mike's Bold Plan to Go to the Moon
Mike decides he must go to the Moon himself. He wants to fix his family's "Goldwing Curse" and make things right. He plans to sneak onto a powerful Saturn V rocket.
Mike, Marty, and Amy try to get into the launch area. But Marty gets caught after a funny incident with alligators!
An Early Launch and a Race to the Moon
Suddenly, the saboteur strikes again! He causes the rocket to launch much earlier than planned. Carson thinks this means no one will be on the rocket to stop him. He believes he can mine the Helium-3 without any problems.
But Mike is on board! He is joined by his grandfather Frank, Amy, and Marty (who helps from Earth's control center). They also have their smart lizard, Igor. They blast off to the Moon to "capture the flag" and bring their family back together.
Stopping Carson and Saving the Day
Carson tries to destroy their spacecraft. But Mike, Frank, Amy, and Igor risk everything on the Moon. With Marty's help from Earth, they manage to find the flag. They show it to the whole world as proof that humans did walk on the Moon.
Amy uses her phone camera to broadcast Carson's evil plans to everyone. Realizing he's been caught, Carson tries to escape. But the team stops him by damaging his futuristic Helium-3 mines.
Family Reunion and the End of the Curse
Mike also learns the truth about why his grandfather Frank missed the first Moon mission. Frank had chickenpox, which he caught from his son, Scott. Frank had blamed Scott for years, but he finally realized it wasn't Scott's fault. He felt guilty for blaming his own son and left his family.
After putting the flag back in its place, everyone returns safely to Earth. Mike's plan works! Frank and Scott make peace after many years. The "Goldwing Curse" is finally broken.
A Funny Ending Scene
In a short scene after the credits, Carson is seen floating in space. He is with his assistant, Steve Gigs. It turns out Steve is an android (a robot) created by Carson's other assistant, Bill Gags. Carson had accidentally destroyed Bill while testing his Helium-3 weapon. Carson forgives Gigs, but then gets annoyed by a robot with an endless battery. It's funny because Carson himself invented the battery!
