Carex austrina, also known as southern sedge, is a type of grass-like plant called a sedge. It naturally grows only in the southern and central parts of the United States. Scientists first officially described this plant in 1886.
Where Does Southern Sedge Grow?
Southern sedge likes to grow in dry places. You can often find it in soils that have a lot of calcium, like those found in prairies (large grasslands), along roadsides, and in forests.
Its Natural Home
This plant is found across the south-central United States. Its natural range stretches from the state of Alabama all the way to Nebraska, and south into Texas.
Spreading to New Places
Sometimes, southern sedge can be found in parts of the eastern United States where it didn't originally grow. This happens because it has spread with hay that was used to help stop soil from washing away (a process called erosion control). It was first officially reported east of the Mississippi River in 1996.
