Carey Baptist Church is a Christian church in Reading, England. It is an independent evangelical and Baptist church. This means it focuses on the Bible and shares its faith with others.
The Story of Carey Baptist Church
The church began in 1867. It was named after William Carey. He was a famous missionary from Northamptonshire. A missionary is someone who travels to another country to share their religious beliefs. William Carey went to India in 1793 and never returned home.
John Howard Hinton was the first pastor of Carey Baptist Church. A pastor is a leader in a Christian church. Over the years, other important leaders have served the church.
In the mid-1970s, two church members, David and Madeleine Potter, started a Christian charity called Prospects. This charity helped adults with learning disabilities. It aimed to help them achieve their full potential. In 2016, Prospects joined the Livability Group.
The church also bought another building in 1993. This building is called The Carey Centre. It is on Anstey Road, which is a street behind the main church building. Later, in 2009, Carey Baptist Church bought part of what used to be the Oasis Public House.
What Carey Baptist Church Does Today
The church building is located on Carey Street in central Reading. It is near the Inner Distribution Road (IDR), Oxford Road, and The Hexagon theatre.
The main church services happen on Sunday. There is a morning service at 10:30 AM and an evening service at 5:00 PM. You can listen to recordings of the sermons online. The Sunday services are also streamed live on the church's website. You can watch them live on Facebook or YouTube too.
Carey Baptist Church is connected with other Christian groups. It is part of Affinity and the Fellowship of Independent Evangelical Churches (FIEC). These groups help churches work together.
The current pastors are James Muldoon and David Magowan. Pastors like Jonathan Stephen and Basil Howlett have also served the church.
Helping Others Around the World
The church continues the work of William Carey. They send missionaries to other countries, like India and the Amazon region. These missionaries help people and share their faith.
For example, in 2005, a missionary named David Barnes was working in Peru. He was in a small village called Aysana. This village is about five hours down a river from Iquitos.
