Careywood is found about 6.5 miles (10.5 km) north of Athol, right along U.S. Route 95, a major highway. It used to have its own post office with the ZIP code 83809, but that closed in 2015.

A Look at Careywood's Past

Careywood wasn't always called by its current name. It was first known as Severance. The community got its new name, Careywood, after a man named Carey from Spokane bought a lot of land in the area.

In its early days, Careywood was an important place for the logging industry. This means that cutting down trees and processing wood was a big part of the local economy and how people made a living. In 1960, the community was quite small, with only 25 people living there.
