Cargeghe (pronounced Car-JEH-geh), also known as Sardinian: Carzèghe in the local Sardinian language, is a small town in Italy. It's called a comune (which means municipality or local government area) and is located on the beautiful island of Sardinia.

Cargeghe is part of the Sassari province. It's about 170 kilometers (105 miles) north of Cagliari, the capital city of Sardinia. It's also quite close to the city of Sassari, only about 9 kilometers (5.6 miles) to its southeast.

Where is Cargeghe?

Cargeghe shares its borders with several other towns. These include Codrongianos, Florinas, Muros, Osilo, and Ossi. This means it's surrounded by a network of small communities in the Sardinian countryside.

Exploring Cargeghe's History and Sights

Even though Cargeghe is a small town, it has some really interesting historical places to explore! These sites tell stories about the people who lived here long ago.

Ancient Tombs: S'Elighe Entosu Necropolis

One of the most fascinating spots is the necropolis of S'Elighe Entosu. A necropolis is like an ancient cemetery. Here, you can find a series of special tombs called domus de janas.

What are Domus de Janas?

Domus de janas means "fairy houses" in Sardinian. They are ancient tombs carved right into the rock. These tombs were made by people during the Neolithic period, which was a very long time ago, thousands of years before now! They give us a peek into how ancient people buried their dead and what they believed.

Historic Churches

Cargeghe also has some beautiful old churches that are worth seeing.

The Parish Church

The main parish church in Cargeghe was built between the 15th and 16th centuries. This means it's hundreds of years old! Churches from this period often show a mix of architectural styles, reflecting the changing times when they were constructed.

Santa Maria 'e Contra Church

Another special church is the countryside Romanesque church of Santa Maria 'e Contra. This church dates back to the 12th century, making it even older than the parish church! Romanesque architecture is known for its thick walls, round arches, and sturdy appearance, often found in buildings from the Middle Ages. It's a great example of the history hidden in the Sardinian landscape.
