The Story of Caribou Coffee

How It All Began (1990s)

The person who started Caribou Coffee was John Puckett. He used to work as a business helper. After a trip to Denali National Park in Alaska, he and his wife, Kim, decided to start a coffee company.

John moved to Minnesota to find the first store location. He also worked to get money to start the business. He first planned to open a store in a big office building in Minneapolis. But the building's owner said no because another store already sold coffee there.

So, John had to find a new spot. The very first Caribou Coffee shop opened in Edina, Minnesota, in December 1992. Edina is a town near Minneapolis.

Growing Bigger (2000s)

In 2003, Michael J. Coles became the new boss, or CEO, of Caribou Coffee. The company grew a lot under his leadership.

By 2005, Caribou Coffee had expanded to 337 stores. These stores were in 14 different states and Washington D.C. In September 2005, Caribou Coffee became a public company. This meant people could buy shares of the company on the stock market.

By 2009, Caribou Coffee had grown even more. It employed over 6,000 people.

Changes and Growth (2010s)

In December 2012, a German company called JAB Holding Company bought Caribou Coffee. This made Caribou Coffee a private company again. Even though it was bought, Caribou Coffee kept its own brand and management team. It also stayed based in Minneapolis.

In May 2013, Caribou Coffee made some big changes. They decided to close 80 stores in several states. They also changed 88 other stores into Peet's Coffee & Tea shops. Caribou Coffee stores stayed open in many other states and in ten countries around the world.

In 2019, John Butcher became the new CEO of Caribou Coffee. Later, in August 2021, Caribou Coffee joined with Panera Bread and Einstein Bros. Bagels. They formed a new group of companies called Panera Brands.

Caribou Coffee also has many stores that are run by other businesses. These are called franchised stores. There are 282 of these stores in nine different countries. These countries include Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia.

In December 2018, the company told its customers about a problem. They found that some customer information might have been accessed without permission. This problem also affected other companies owned by JAB Holding Company.
