Lac Carillon is a beautiful lake found in the province of Quebec, Canada. It sits on the north side of the famous St. Lawrence River. This lake is special because it stretches across two different towns:

  • Notre-Dame-de-Montauban
  • Saint-Ubalde

The area around Lac Carillon is mainly covered by forests. Because of this, cutting down trees (forestry) is a big part of the local economy. Tourism and outdoor fun are also very important. The lake is part of the Portneuf Regional Natural Park. This park is a great place for people to visit and enjoy nature.

During the colder months, Lac Carillon freezes over. You can usually find ice on the lake from early December until the end of March. It's generally safe to walk or play on the ice from mid-December to mid-March.

About Lac Carillon

Lac Carillon is a fairly large lake. It is about 2.8 kilometres (1.7 mi) (1.7 miles) long. At its widest point, it measures about 1.9 kilometres (1.2 mi) (1.2 miles) across. The lake has an interesting shape and is home to five islands.

The lake can be thought of as having three main sections:

  • Western Part: This section is about 0.8 kilometres (0.50 mi) (0.5 miles) long. Two pieces of land almost meet here, with an island in between. This creates two narrow passages for boats to move through.
  • Central Part: This is the longest section, measuring about 1.8 kilometres (1.1 mi) (1.1 miles). It has three islands. A long piece of land stretches out from the south shore, separating this part from the eastern section.
  • Eastern Part: This section is about 1.9 kilometres (1.2 mi) (1.2 miles) long, running north to south.

Nearby Lakes and Rivers

Lac Carillon is located close to several other lakes. For example, it is only 0.4 kilometres (0.25 mi) (0.25 miles) southwest of Montauban Lake.

The water from Lac Carillon flows out into the Weller River. From there, the water travels through a series of other rivers:

Portneuf Regional Natural Park

The Portneuf Regional Natural Park covers a large area of about 70 kilometres (43.50 mi) (27 square miles). This park includes many beautiful lakes, such as Long Lake, Montauban Lake, Carillon Lake, Sept Îles Lake, and Lac en Coeur.

The park is a popular spot for many outdoor activities. Visitors can enjoy hiking on trails, cross-country skiing in winter, and launching boats onto the lakes. It's a great place to explore nature and have fun outdoors.

Name of the Lake

The name "Lac Carillon" was officially recorded on December 5, 1968. This was done by the Commission de toponymie du Québec, which is the organization responsible for naming places in Quebec.
