Cariló is a special beach town in Argentina. Its name comes from the Mapuche language. It means "Green Dune." This town is built inside a man-made forest. It sits right on the Atlantic Ocean coast. Cariló is about 360 kilometers south of Buenos Aires city. It is part of the Pinamar Partido area.
For a long time, getting into Cariló was very difficult. Only certain people were allowed. Now, anyone can visit this beautiful town. However, things in Cariló can be quite expensive. This means it is still mostly a place for people with a lot of money.
Cariló offers many fun things to do for all ages. The town has big sand dunes. These dunes are perfect for riding quads (four-wheelers). Many hotels and lodges in Cariló rent out quads. Some even work with companies on the beach that rent them. Riding quads on the dunes, called dune bashing, is a favorite activity. Both visitors and people who live there all year love it.

How Cariló Became a Forest Town
The area where Cariló is now used to be just huge desert dunes. These dunes were very close to the sea. But over time, this sandy area became a large forest and a beautiful beach.
Starting the Forest
In the early 1920s, a man named Mr. Héctor Manuel Guerrero began a big project. He started planting trees on his farm called "Dos Montes." This farm included a cattle ranch named "Médanos," which means "Dunes" in Spanish. It was a very large area, about 1,700 hectares.
Facing Challenges
Mr. Guerrero and his team faced many problems. There were no easy ways to get around or transport things. Also, they had almost no experience planting trees in sand. But the Guerrero family decided to keep planting trees all the way to the seashore. They even planted some fruit trees. These trees helped bring many local bird species to the area.
Naming and Growing
In 1935, this new forest area was officially named "Cariló." A few years later, in 1938, the tree nurseries were moved. They went to the "Dos Montes" farm. By 1947, more than 660,000 trees were ready to be planted!
In 1948, a special house was built. It was called "Divisadero," or "Casa Grande." This house was built on top of a dune right by the sea. The new forest was behind it.
Completing the Forest
During the 1970s, all the tree nurseries were closed down. This happened because the Guerrero family had finished planting trees on all their private land. The forest was complete.
Naming the Streets
The sons of the founder decided how to name all the streets in Cariló. Streets that run towards the sea (perpendicular) are named after wild plants and trees. Streets that run parallel to the sea are named after local birds. All the street names are in alphabetical order.
Fun Things to Do in Cariló
Cariló is a popular beach town. It has many hotels, lodges, cabins, and summer homes. People from Argentina and other countries come here for vacations.
