Early Life and Musical Beginnings
Carl Harvey was born in Jamaica. He moved to Toronto, Ontario, Canada, with his family when he was young. Carl started playing the guitar when he was 13 years old. He also played the tuba in school.
Carl Harvey's Music Career
After being inspired by music from Jimi Hendrix, Carl Harvey joined a funk and soul band in Toronto called Crack of Dawn. This band signed with Columbia Records. They had popular songs in Canada like "It's Alright" and "Keep the Faith" in 1976.
Playing in Jamaica
In the mid-1970s, Carl often visited Jamaica. There, he recorded music with Bunny Lee's house band, The Aggrovators. He played on albums such as Kaya Dub and Jackie Mittoo's In Cold Blood. He also played guitar on Willi Williams' album Messenger Man. In 1978, Carl recorded some guitar music with Bunny Lee. These recordings were released in 1979 as the album Ecstasy of Mankind. This album was later re-released in 2005 with the correct title and information.
Joining Toots & the Maytals
In the 1980s, Carl Harvey became the lead guitarist for Toots & the Maytals. He has been a key member of this band for over 25 years. The band has performed all over the world, including in the United States and the United Kingdom.
Other Music Projects
Carl Harvey also toured with his own band. He worked with Jackie Mittoo and became a record producer. He produced four albums for the band Messenjah. Two of these albums were nominated for Juno Awards, which are important music awards in Canada. He also produced recordings for Juno-winning artist Kim Richardson and the band Sway. Later, Carl played lead guitar for Messenjah.
In 2005, Carl Harvey released his second solo album, called The Times.
