Carl Lee III, born on February 6, 1961, is a former American football player. He was a talented cornerback in the National Football League (NFL). Carl was picked by the Minnesota Vikings in the 1983 NFL draft. He played most of his career with the Vikings before joining the New Orleans Saints for his last season. After his playing days, Carl became a football coach. He coached at West Virginia State from 1996 to 2005.

Carl Lee played college football for the Marshall Thundering Herd. He was so good that in 1995, he was added to the Marshall University Athletics Hall of Fame. This honor was for his amazing skills in both football and track and field during his college years.

Carl Lee's NFL Journey

Playing for the Minnesota Vikings

Carl Lee was chosen by the Minnesota Vikings in the seventh round of the 1983 NFL draft. He played for the Vikings for 11 years, from 1983 to 1993. During his time with the team, he played in 169 games and started 144 of them. He made 779 tackles and had 31 interceptions. He even ran two of those interceptions back for touchdowns! Carl was recognized as one of the best players, making the Pro Bowl three times: in 1988, 1989, and 1990.

Time with the New Orleans Saints

In 1994, Carl Lee moved to the New Orleans Saints. He played one season with them, starting 8 of 12 games. During this time, he made 28 tackles and had two more interceptions.

After the 1994 season, Carl Lee decided to retire from playing football. He had a great 12-year career in the NFL. He started 152 of his 181 games. Overall, he had 799 tackles, 31 interceptions (with two touchdowns), and recovered seven fumbles.

Carl Lee's Coaching Career

After retiring from the NFL, Carl Lee started a new chapter as a coach. In January 1996, he became the head football coach at West Virginia State University. He coached the Yellow Jackets for ten seasons. He resigned from this position after the 2005 season. During his time there, his team had a record of 34 wins and 75 losses.

Later, on February 17, 2022, it was announced that Carl Lee would return to his old high school, South Charleston High School, as the head football coach. However, he resigned from that role on February 5, 2023.
