Carl Thomas became well known for his song "I Wish" in 2000. This song reached number 20 on the Billboard Hot 100 music chart. His first album, Emotional, came out in 2000. Both Emotional and his next album, Let's Talk About It (2004), reached the top ten on the Billboard 200 album chart. About Carl Thomas
Carl Thomas was born in Aurora, Illinois. He went to East Aurora High School. He started singing in Chicago and was part of a group called The Fourmula. Later, he moved to New York City. There, he sang at clubs during "open-mic nights." This is where people can perform for an audience.
One night, Sean "Puffy" Combs saw him perform. Combs was very impressed and signed Carl Thomas to his company, Bad Boy Entertainment, in 1997.
Music Career
In February 2000, Carl Thomas released his popular song "I Wish". This song was produced by Mike City. "I Wish" was a huge hit, staying at the top of the R&B charts for six weeks. Because of its success, his first album, Emotional, was released on April 18, 2000.
This album also had other popular songs like "Summer Rain" and the title song "Emotional." "Summer Rain" was even on the soundtrack for the 2000 movie Shaft. The album Emotional sold over 1 million copies, which means it was "certified platinum." Later, the famous rapper Jay-Z used parts of Carl Thomas's "I Wish" in his own song "I Just Wanna Love U (Give It 2 Me)". Carl Thomas also sang on songs with other artists like Memphis Bleek.
Carl Thomas's second album, Let's Talk About It, came out on March 23, 2004. The songs from this album, "She Is" and "Let's Talk About It", did not become big hits. Carl Thomas took a break from music after a sad family event, which affected the promotion of his album.
In 2005, Carl Thomas was featured on R&B singer Amerie's album Touch. In 2006, he was on a song called "Dumpin'" from the 2Pac album Pac's Life.
On December 7, 2006, Carl Thomas received a nomination for a Grammy Award. This was for the song "Everyday (Family Reunion)" from the movie soundtrack of Tyler Perry's Madea's Family Reunion. He was nominated for "Best R&B Performance by a Duo Or Group With Vocals."
His third album, So Much Better, was released on May 30, 2007. It reached number 25 on the US Billboard 200 chart. Carl Thomas's last album, Conquer, was released on December 6, 2011. The first song from this album was "Don't Kiss Me," which featured Snoop Dogg.
Personal Life
In 2004, after his album Let's Talk About It was released, Carl Thomas went through a very difficult time when his brother passed away. This sad event led him to cancel his music tour and take a break from his music career. His record label even started a foundation in his brother's memory. In 2019, Carl Thomas had surgery for a non-cancerous growth.
