Carl Vilhelm Hartman facts for kids
Carl Vilhelm Hartman (born August 19, 1862 – died June 19, 1941) was a Swedish scientist. He started as a botanist, studying plants. Later, he became an anthropologist, which means he studied people, their cultures, and their history.
Early Adventures
Carl Hartman first trained to be a botanist. This means he learned all about plants. He then joined a Norwegian explorer named Carl Sofus Lumholtz on a three-year trip. They traveled to the Sierra Madre Mountains in Mexico.
One of Hartman's jobs on this trip was to study the plants that local people used. While working with Lumholtz, his interest began to change. He became more interested in people and their cultures than just plants. This is how he started to become an anthropologist.
After his work in Mexico in 1893, Hartman went with Lumholtz to a very big event. It was called the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago. This was a huge world's fair. Hartman spent six months there helping to set up displays about different cultures. In 1894, he wrote an article called "The Indians of Northwestern Mexico."
Exploring Central America
From 1896 to 1898, Carl Hartman led his own trip. He went to countries in Central America like Costa Rica, El Salvador, and Guatemala. On this trip, he studied many things. He looked at archaeology, which is the study of old things people left behind. He also studied different cultures (ethnology) and human body measurements (anthropometry).
One important place he dug up was called Las Mercedes. This was an ancient site in Costa Rica. He found many interesting artifacts there.
Museum Work
When Carl Hartman returned to Sweden, he started working at a museum. He became a curator at the Naturhistoriska riksmuseet (Museum of Natural History) in Stockholm. A curator is someone who takes care of a museum's collections.
In 1901, Hartman published a detailed book. It was called "Archaeological Researches in Costa Rica." This book shared all his findings from his trip. From 1908 to 1923, he became the director of the part of the museum that focused on cultures and people.
Carl Vilhelm Hartman passed away in Stockholm on June 19, 1941.
