About Carla Lalli Music
Carla was born into an Italian-American family. Her mother was a food critic and edited cookbooks. Carla went to Brown University and later studied cooking at the French Culinary Institute.
Carla's Early Career
Carla worked in food service for more than ten years. She was a line chef, which means she cooked on the main cooking line in a restaurant. She also managed kitchens for famous chefs like Rocco DiSpirito. Carla was even the first general manager for the popular restaurant Shake Shack. She also taught cooking management at the Institute for Culinary Education.
In 2009, Carla started writing about food. She worked as an editor for Everyday Food magazine. In 2011, she joined Bon Appétit magazine as an editor. She later became the magazine's food director. In 2020, she changed her role to focus on writing her second cookbook.
YouTube Star
Carla first appeared in videos on the Bon Appétit YouTube channel in 2015. She quickly became a regular in their cooking videos. In 2018, Carla became the host of Back-to-Back Chef. This web series showed her teaching a celebrity how to cook a dish. The funny part was that they faced away from each other and only used spoken instructions!
Famous guests on Back-to-Back Chef included Natalie Portman, Michael Shannon, and Elizabeth Olsen. People loved the show for its humor and Carla's hosting style. Vulture magazine called Back-to-Back Chef "simple, elegant, and absolutely genius." Carla also appeared in other Bon Appétit series like Test Kitchen Talks and Making Perfect.
In August 2020, Carla and other chefs decided to stop filming videos for the Bon Appétit YouTube channel. This happened after some issues came up about fair treatment and pay for staff. They felt there wasn't enough progress in solving these problems at Condé Nast Entertainment.
Cookbooks and New Shows
Carla's first cookbook, Where Cooking Begins: Uncomplicated Recipes to Make You a Great Cook, came out in March 2019. In May 2020, this book won a James Beard Foundation Book Award.
