Antoine Charles Horace Vernet, known as Carle Vernet, was a famous French painter. He was born on August 14, 1758, and passed away on November 27, 1836. Carle was the youngest son of another well-known painter, Claude-Joseph Vernet. His own son, Horace Vernet, also became a very talented artist.

Carle Vernet was born in a city called Bordeaux, in France. From a very young age, around five years old, he showed a huge interest in drawing horses. Even though he loved horses, he also studied art in a traditional way. He learned from his father and another artist named Nicolas-Bernard Lépicié.

In 1782, Carle won a special art award called the Prix de Rome. This award allowed him to study art in Rome, Italy. However, after winning, he seemed to lose some interest in painting. His father had to bring him back home from Rome to encourage him to continue his art career.

How Did Carle Vernet Change Art?

Carle Vernet was known for painting horses in a new and exciting way. In his painting "Triumph of Aemilius Paulus," he drew horses differently from other artists. He studied real horses in stables and riding schools to make his drawings more lifelike.

His paintings of hunting scenes, horse races, and beautiful landscapes were very popular. He also worked as a lithographer, which is a way of making prints from drawings.

During a difficult time in France, known as the French Revolution, Carle stopped painting for a while.

When he started painting again, his style had changed a lot. He began to draw detailed pictures of battles and military campaigns. These paintings often showed the bravery of Napoleon's army.

His drawings of Napoleon's campaigns in Italy were highly praised. His painting of the Battle of Marengo was also very famous. For his painting Morning of Austerlitz, Napoleon himself gave him a special award called the Legion of Honour. Later, King Louis XVIII of France gave him another important award, the Order of Saint Michael. After these successes, Carle became very good at painting hunting scenes and different kinds of horses.

Carle Vernet was not just a painter; he was also a very skilled horse rider. Even when he was 78 years old, just a few days before he passed away, people saw him riding horses as if he were a young man. He died in Paris, France.
