About Carli Biessels
Carli Biessels was born and passed away in Nijmegen, a city in the Netherlands. She studied pedagogy there, which is the study of how to teach and educate children. She also worked with children who needed extra support.
Before writing her own books, Carli wrote many stories for popular children's magazines. These included Okki and Taptoe.
Her First Books
Carli Biessels started her career as an author a bit later in life. She was 62 years old when her first book, Twee druppels water (meaning Two Drops of Water), was published in 1998. This book was quickly recognized. It was even considered for the Gouden Uil award in 1999. This award is a big deal for books in the Netherlands.
Awards and Recognition
Carli Biessels won several important awards for her writing. In 2010, she received the prestigious Woutertje Pieterse Prijs for her book Juwelen van stras (meaning Jewels of Rhinestones). This award celebrates the best Dutch children's books.
She also won the Vlag en Wimpel award twice. She received it in 2001 for her book De feestrede (The Celebration Speech). Later, in 2007, she won it again for Irah en de dieren (Irah and the Animals).
Her very last book, Ik moet je iets belangrijks vertellen (I Have Something Important to Tell You), came out in 2016. It was published after she passed away.
Working with Illustrators
Many talented artists helped bring Carli's stories to life with their drawings. Some of these illustrators include Martijn van der Linden, Harmen van Straaten, and Marije Tolman. Other artists like Patsy Backx, Marjolein Hund, and Wolf Erlbruch also illustrated her books.
A special fact is that one of her own daughters illustrated her book Anton en het kamelenkleed (Anton and the Camel Blanket) in 1999.
Some of Carli's books have also been translated into German. This allowed more children in other countries to enjoy her stories.
Carli Biessels was married and had four children.
