Carloman ruled alongside his older brother, Louis III, from 879. After Louis III died in 882, Carloman ruled by himself until his own death. He was the second son of King Louis the Stammerer and Queen Ansgarde.

Becoming King of West Francia
When Carloman's father, King Louis the Stammerer, died, some important Frankish nobles wanted Louis III to be the only king. However, in the end, both Carloman and Louis III were chosen as kings. They were both crowned in September 879.
There were some questions about whether they were truly allowed to be kings. But these doubts went away after they won a big victory against the Vikings in November of that year. In March 880, the brothers decided to split their father's kingdom. Carloman received the southern parts, which included the regions of Burgundy and Aquitaine.
Dealing with Duke Boso
While the brothers were ruling, a powerful leader named Duke Boso of Provence decided he no longer wanted to follow them. He was elected King of Provence in October 879.
In 880, Carloman and Louis III marched their armies against Boso. They took control of the northern parts of his land. They then started a long attack on the city of Vienne, which lasted for two years. The city was finally captured in 882 by Richard, Duke of Burgundy.
Carloman's Early Death
Carloman II died near Les Andelys in December 884. He was only about 18 years old. He was out hunting when he was accidentally stabbed in the leg by his servant, Bertoldus. This happened while they were being attacked by a wild boar.
Carloman survived the initial injury but sadly died seven days later, between December 5 and 6. Some newer books say he died on December 12, but older records don't support this. After Carloman's death, his lands were taken over by his cousin, the emperor Charles the Fat.
