Carlos Cruz-Diez (born August 17, 1923, died July 27, 2019) was a famous artist from Venezuela. Many people say he was one of the most creative artists of the 20th century. Cruz-Diez was a master of Kinetic art and Op art. These art styles play with movement and optical illusions to make you see things differently.
His Artistic Journey
Carlos Cruz-Diez created amazing art that often changed depending on how you looked at it. He was very interested in how color works and how it can seem to move or change. His art makes you think about how we see the world.
One of his most famous works is called Chromosaturation (Cromosaturación). He first thought of this artwork in 1965. It is a special kind of art called a site-specific installation. This means it is made to fit a particular place. This artwork has been shown all over the world. You could see it at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston in 2011. It was also at the Grand Palais in Paris in 2013. In 2020, the Pérez Art Museum Miami bought this important piece.

- Project for an Exterior Wall at the Museum of Modern Art, made between 1954 and 1965.
- Physichromie 21 at the Museum of Modern Art, from 1960. His "Physichromie" series explores how colors change as you move around the artwork.

- Chromosaturation (Cromosaturación), which he first imagined in 1965. This work is now at the Pérez Art Museum Miami.
Awards and Recognition
Carlos Cruz-Diez received many important awards for his art. These awards show how much his work was valued around the world.
- In 1966, he won the Grand Award at the III Bienal Americana de Arte in Argentina.
- He received the International Painting Award at the IX Bienal de São Paulo in Brazil in 1967.
- In 1971, he was given the National Prize of Plastic Arts of Venezuela. This is a very high honor in his home country.
- He was made a "Commandeur de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres" in Paris, France, in 2002. This is a special award for people who have made great contributions to art.
- He received several "Doctor Honoris Causa" degrees from universities. This means they honored him for his achievements, even if he didn't study there.
- In 2012, he was awarded the Ordre National de la Légion d'Honneur in France. This is one of the highest awards given by the French government.
- He also received the Paez Medal of Art in New York City in 2012.
- In 2015, he won the Turner Medal for Colour in London, United Kingdom.
