Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Carlos Edmundo de Ory (born April 27, 1923 – died November 11, 2010) was a Spanish avant-garde poet. He was born in the city of Cadiz, Spain. His father, Eduardo de Ory, was also a poet and started the Academia Hispanoamericana de Cádiz. Famous poets like Juan Ramón Jiménez and Rubén Darío were friends with his father.

What is Postism?

Carlos Edmundo de Ory helped change Spanish poetry after the Spanish Civil War. He created new kinds of poems that used ideas from modern art movements like Futurism, Dadaism, and Surrealism.

He, along with Eduardo Chicharro and Italian poet Silvano Sernesi, started a poetry movement called Postism.

Why Postism was Important

Postism was a group of writers who loved to play with language in their poems. They wanted to be different from the traditional, romantic poetry that was common in Spain at the time. Some writers linked to Postism were Gloria Fuertes and Gabriel Celaya.

Ory tried twice to publish a magazine for Postism. However, the government of Francisco Franco stopped both magazines. They were not allowed to be shared with the public.

Challenges and Rediscovery

Because of this opposition, Postism did not last very long. It became less known, and Ory continued to write and publish his work away from the public eye. In the 1960s, he moved to France to escape the strict literary and political situation in Spain.

It wasn't until the 1970s that poets and critics, especially Jaume Pont from Catalunya, "re-discovered" Postism and Ory's work. Since then, both Ory and the Postism movement have become more recognized and have influenced Spanish literature.

Ory's Influence on Poetry

Carlos Edmundo de Ory's role in Spain was similar to that of Allen Ginsberg and the Beat poets in the United States. He opened up new ways for Spanish poetry to use language and different topics.

In fact, Allen Ginsberg, along with Edith Grossman, even translated a book of Ory's poems. However, this book was never published. Ginsberg also wrote a poem dedicated to Ory in his own book, Cosmopolitan Greetings.

For almost 60 years, Ory was one of Spain's most creative and original writers. He published many books of poetry and literary criticism. He lived with his wife, French artist Laura Lachéroy, in a village in France called Thézy-Glimont. He passed away on November 11, 2010, from leukaemia.
