Carlos Martínez de Irujo was born to Manuel Martinez de Irujo y de Erice and Narcisa Tacón y Gamiz. His mother was born in Beriain, Navarre, in 1740. He had two sisters named Narcisa and María Rafaela.

Serving as a Diplomat

Carlos Martínez de Irujo, often called Casa Irujo or Yrujo, was a Spanish diplomat. From 1796 to 1807, he served as the Spanish minister (a type of ambassador) to the United States. After his time in the U.S., he worked as a minister in Rio de Janeiro and then in Paris.

Becoming Prime Minister

He held the important position of Secretary of State, which is like being the Prime Minister of Spain. He served in this role three times:

  • First, in 1812.
  • Then, for a short time from 1818 to 1819.
  • Finally, for a few weeks from December 1823 until his death in January 1824.

Family Life

In 1794, while working at the Spanish embassy in London, he had a daughter named Lavinia de Irujo. Lavinia later had two daughters, Fredericka and Frances. The artist Henry Fuseli created several drawings of Lavinia.

In 1798, Don Carlos married Sarah McKean. Sarah was the daughter of Thomas McKean, who was the governor of Pennsylvania in the United States. Their son, Carlos Martínez de Irujo y McKean (1802-1855), later became the Duke of Sotomayor. He also served as the prime minister of Spain for a short time in 1847.
