Early Life and Becoming a Priest
Carlos Osoro Sierra was born in Castañeda, a town in northern Spain, on May 16, 1945. He first studied at a teaching school and worked as a teacher for a year in Santander.
Later, he decided to become a priest. He went to a special seminary in Salamanca for adults. There, he earned degrees in theology and philosophy. He also studied exact sciences at the Complutense University of Madrid and education at the University of Salamanca. He became a priest on July 29, 1973.
Church Roles and Leadership
After becoming a priest, Carlos Osoro Sierra worked in a local church in Torrelavega from 1973 to 1976. He then took on many important roles within the church in his area. He helped manage the church's offices and worked with young people interested in becoming priests. He also helped guide people who were not priests but wanted to serve the church.
Becoming a Bishop
On December 27, 1996, Pope John Paul II chose him to be the Bishop of Ourense. He officially became a bishop on February 22, 1997.
Later, on January 7, 2002, he was appointed Archbishop of Oviedo. An archbishop is a bishop who leads a larger or more important area. He also served as the head of a special group for priests in Spain from 1999 to 2005.
In 2009, Pope Benedict XVI named him the Archbishop of Valencia. He took on this role on April 18, 2009.
Archbishop of Madrid and Cardinal
On August 28, 2014, Pope Francis appointed Carlos Osoro Sierra as the Archbishop of Madrid. People saw him as a leader who followed traditional church teachings but also cared deeply about people.
In October 2015, he took part in an important meeting about families. In November, Pope Francis also chose him to be part of a special council for the Synod of Bishops.
On November 19, 2016, Pope Francis announced that he would make Carlos Osoro Sierra a Cardinal. Cardinals are very important leaders in the Catholic Church who help the Pope. He was given the title of Cardinal-Priest of Santa Maria in Trastevere, which is a church in Rome. In December 2017, he became a member of a group that helps with Catholic education.
His Approach to Ministry
Pope Francis has called Carlos Osoro Sierra "Don Carlos the pilgrim." This nickname means that he often walks around his archdiocese. He likes to meet people and understand their lives and needs.
He cares a lot about helping young people decide to become priests or nuns. In Valencia, the number of young men studying to become priests grew because of his efforts. When he arrived in Madrid, he planned to start a program to help people connect with the Church and strengthen their Christian faith.
He also invites teenagers to join him once a month for a special prayer vigil. During these meetings, he talks with them to understand their worries and hopes. He often celebrates Mass in prisons, showing his care for everyone. He also visited convents where nuns live a quiet, prayerful life.
When asked if he was a "liberal" or "conservative" leader, Carlos Osoro Sierra said he was simply "a man of the Church." He believes that such labels can distract from the Church's main work.
In 2019, Pope Francis made him a member of a group that helps Eastern Catholic Churches. In 2021, he joined a commission that helps with the Church in Latin America.
Pope Francis accepted his resignation as Archbishop of Madrid on June 12, 2023.
