How Carlton Got Its Name
The exact story of how Carlton got its name is a bit of a mystery. Some people say it was named after Wilson Carl. Others believe it was named for John Carl Sr. These two men might have been from the same family.
Early Days and the Post Office
The first post office in Carlton opened in 1874. F. J. Fryer was the first postmaster. Before this, Wilson Carl had the original post office for the area. It was about 7 miles west of where Carlton is now.
Wilson Carl's home was called Mountain House. It was also a stagecoach stop and blacksmith shop. He traveled to Oregon with Dr. Joel Knight.
The Railroad and Town Growth
Wilson Carl worked with the railroad company in Portland. He wanted them to build tracks closer to his land. It was easier for the railroad to build where Carlton is today. This is because going over the mountain to Wilson Carl's original property was too difficult.
So, the town of Carlton grew around the railroad. It was first called "Carl's town." Over time, the name changed to Carlton.
Wilson Carl's Contributions
Wilson Carl started as a carpenter and shoemaker. He became a wealthy landowner. He helped build parts of what is now Linfield College in McMinnville. He also helped start the Republican Party in McMinnville. He was a County Commissioner and owned the land where the Yamhill County Courthouse now stands.
