Carlton is a small area in West Yorkshire, England. It's part of the City of Leeds. Carlton is made up of two villages: East Carlton and West Carlton. Back in 2001, only 169 people lived here.

Where is Carlton Located?

Carlton is found just north of the Leeds Bradford Airport. It has several neighbors! To its west is Guiseley. To the north, you'll find Otley, Pool-in-Wharfedale, and Bramhope. To the east, Carlton borders Cookridge.

A big road called the A658 road runs through Carlton. It goes from the southwest to the northeast. Near the airport, there's an industrial area called the Leeds Bradford Airport Industrial Estate. This estate is in the southern part of Carlton. Also, a place called Carlton Moor is located north of both East and West Carlton villages.

What's in a Name?

The name "Carlton" has a long history! It first appeared in a very old book called the Domesday Book. This book was written way back in 1086. In the Domesday Book, Carlton was spelled in a few different ways, like Carleton or Carletun.

The name "Carlton" comes from two old words. One is an Old Norse word, karla. This word meant "of commoners" or "of ordinary people." The other word is an Old English word, tūn, which meant "estate" or "farm." So, when you put them together, "Carlton" once meant "an estate owned by commoners." It's like saying it was a place where regular people lived and worked.
