Carlton Peak facts for kids
Carlton Peak is a tall hill, also called a summit, located in the beautiful Sawtooth Mountains of northeastern Minnesota. It's found in Cook County, near a small town called Tofte. This peak offers amazing views of the surrounding area, including parts of the vast Superior National Forest.
How Carlton Peak Got Its Name
Carlton Peak was named in 1848 during an important trip. A man named Reuben B. Carlton from Fond du Lac, Minnesota, climbed the peak with Colonel Charles Whittlesey. Colonel Whittlesey was a geologist, meaning he studied the Earth's rocks and landforms. He was on a special expedition to map and understand the geology of the area.
Colonel Whittlesey was so thankful for Reuben Carlton's help that he decided to name the mountain after him. This is how "Carlton Peak" got its name, honoring an early explorer of the region.
Visiting Carlton Peak Today
Today, Carlton Peak is a popular spot for visitors. The south and east sides of the peak are part of Temperance River State Park. This means that if you want to visit, you'll need a valid Minnesota State Park sticker for your vehicle. You can often see signs on the road near the peak reminding visitors of this requirement.
The peak is a "Day Use" area, which means it's open for people to visit during the day. It's a great place to hike and enjoy the natural beauty of Minnesota's North Shore.
