Carol Lowery Delaney, born on December 12, 1940, is an American expert who studies people and cultures. She is also a retired professor of anthropology at Stanford University.

Education and Learning

Carol Delaney studied at several well-known universities. She earned her first degree in philosophy from Boston University in 1962. Later, she continued her studies at Harvard Divinity School in 1976. In 1984, she received her Ph.D. (a very high degree) in cultural anthropology from the University of Chicago. This means she became an expert in understanding different cultures and how people live.

Teaching and Research Career

Dr. Delaney has had an impressive career in academics. She was an assistant director at the Center for the Study of World Religions at Harvard University. She also taught as a visiting professor at Brown University. Today, she is a professor emerita (a retired professor who keeps her title) at Stanford University. She also continues her research as a scholar at Brown University.

Studying Cultures and People

Dr. Delaney is a cultural anthropologist. This means she studies different human cultures, their beliefs, and their ways of life. She often focuses on how gender and religion play a role in societies.

Her first major research trip was to Turkey from 1979 to 1982. She also studied Turkish immigrants in Belgium between 1984 and 1985. More recently, her research has looked into the religious beliefs of Christopher Columbus.

Dr. Delaney worked at Harvard University from 1985 to 1987. At Stanford University, she was an assistant professor, then an associate professor, before becoming a professor emerita in 2005. She also taught at Brown University in 2006 and 2007. Since 2007, she has been a research scholar at Brown University and at the John Carter Brown Library.

Her book, Columbus and the Quest for Jerusalem, has led to discussions. Some people have praised her for showing that Columbus sometimes gets all the blame for actions taken by many Europeans against native peoples. Others have raised questions about how the book presents the history of Columbus's actions.
