Carol Lowery Delaney (born December 12, 1940) is an American anthropologist and author. She is also an Associate Professor of Cultural and Social Anthropology, Emerita of Stanford University. This means she is a retired professor who still holds an honored title.

Her Education Journey

Carol Delaney started her studies at Boston University, where she earned a degree in philosophy in 1962. Later, she went to Harvard Divinity School and then earned her Ph.D. in cultural anthropology from the University of Chicago in 1984. A Ph.D. is the highest degree you can get in a field of study.

Teaching and Research

Dr. Delaney has had an impressive career in academics. She was an assistant director at the Center for the Study of World Religions at Harvard University. She also taught as a visiting professor at Brown University. For many years, she was a professor at Stanford University. Since 2007, she has been a research scholar at Brown University, continuing her important studies.

Exploring Cultures and Beliefs

Dr. Delaney is a cultural anthropologist. This means she studies human societies and cultures, focusing on how people live, their beliefs, and their traditions. She has particularly looked at gender roles and religion in different societies.

Her first major research was in Turkey from 1979 to 1982. She also studied Turkish immigrants in Belgium from 1984 to 1985. More recently, her work has focused on the religious beliefs of Christopher Columbus.

In 1995, Dr. Delaney helped edit a book called Naturalizing Power: Essays in Feminist Cultural Analysis. She has also written many other books and articles. Her recent work includes "Investigating Culture: An Experiential Introduction to Anthropology," which helps people learn about anthropology.

Dr. Delaney's research on Christopher Columbus has received different reactions. Some people have praised her for showing that Columbus often took the blame for actions committed by many Europeans against native peoples in the "New World". Others have criticized her for not focusing enough on the difficult parts of Columbus's history.
