Carol Miller (author) facts for kids
Carol Miller (born in November 1933 in Los Angeles, California) is an American-Mexican artist who creates sculptures and writes books. She has been a sculptor for over 50 years, showing her art in about 200 exhibits. She has also been a writer for her whole career.
Her Amazing Career
Carol Miller started her professional writing career at just 15 years old! She wrote for many magazines in Mexico, like Mexican Life and Welcome. From 1962 to 1965, she was a special reporter for Life magazine in Mexico. She also wrote travel stories about Mexico for Mexicana Airlines.
She is very good at languages, working as a bilingual translator. Carol is also a scholar who studies ancient cultures, especially the Maya. She has written about movies and art, and even helped people with dyslexia. She has also worked as a magazine editor, lecturer, photographer, and even a food expert!
In 1960, she started a famous craft market called the Bazaar Sabado. Carol has written 36 books, many of them in both English and Spanish. Her books come from her many travels and research, first visiting Maya sites in Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, Honduras, and El Salvador. Then she explored other ancient cultures around the world. She loves to focus on archaeology (studying old things), religion, mythology, and history.
Her articles about ancient Greece, published in a Mexico City newspaper, earned her a special title: "Honorary Cultural Attaché" for the Greek Embassy in Mexico. People even nicknamed her "Athenea"!
Books and Art Awards
One of her books, Alma de mi alma, el México de los extranjeros, was published in 2011. It tells the stories of 18 important people who moved to Mexico and what they contributed to the country. Carol Miller herself is one of the people featured in the book!
Her work as an artist, especially as a sculptor, has won her special awards. She received the "Superior Academic Order" from an art academy in Italy. In 2004, she was even named "Honorary National Councilor for Mexico" for her amazing contributions to art, especially her sculptures and writings.
Carol's sculptures have been shown in over 200 art shows and auctions for more than 50 years. She is also a member of the Society for American Archaeology (SAA) and a research consultant at the Institute for Maya Studies in Mexico. She helps guide a group called Exploring Solutions Past (ESP): The Maya Forest Alliance, which works with the El Pilar Archaeological Reserve in Belize.
Her Life in Mexico
Carol Miller has lived in Mexico for a long time with her husband, Tomás González, who is a designer and art restorer. They live in Jardines del Pedregal, Mexico City. She has two children, Fausto and Dushka Zapata. Carol is now a naturalized citizen of Mexico. She has also worked to help protect the Xoloitzcuintles, which are hairless Mexican dogs.
