Carol Miller, born on November 10, 1933, in Los Angeles, California, is a talented American-Mexican sculptor and writer. She has been creating sculptures for over 50 years, with her art shown in more than 200 exhibitions. She has also been a writer throughout her professional life.

Carol Miller's Amazing Career

Early Journalism and Travel Writing

Carol Miller started her career in journalism at just fifteen years old. She continued writing in Mexico, contributing to many magazines like Mexican Life and Welcome. From 1962 to 1965, she was a correspondent for Life magazine in Mexico. She also wrote travel articles about Mexico for Mexicana Airlines.

Carol is a skilled bilingual translator and a scholar who has researched ancient cultures, especially the Maya. She has also worked as a film and art critic. She even helped people with learning differences like dyslexia. Besides all this, she has been a magazine editor, lecturer, photographer, and expert on food. She also worked for advertising agencies and archaeological projects.

In 1960, Carol Miller started a famous craft market called the Bazaar Sabado. She has written 36 books, many published in both English and Spanish. These books came from her extensive travels and research, first exploring Maya sites in Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, Honduras, and El Salvador. Later, she traveled to other related cultures around the world. Her special focus is on archaeology, religion, mythology, and history.

During the 1970s and 1980s, her articles about the Greek world, published in the Mexico City News, earned her the title of Honorary Cultural Attaché for the Greek Embassy in Mexico. People even nicknamed her "Athenea" because of her knowledge of Greek culture.

Contributions to Mexican Culture

In 2011, Carol Miller published a book called Alma de mi alma, el México de los extranjeros. This book highlights eighteen important people who moved to Mexico and made great contributions to the country. Besides Miller herself, the book features famous artists and writers like Leonora Carrington and Edward James. This book was a joint effort with important Mexican historical and immigration organizations.

Achievements in Sculpture and Arts

Carol Miller's work as an artist, especially as a sculptor, has earned her high honors. She received the "Superior Academic Order" from an international academy in Vinzaglio, Italy. In 2004, this honor was raised to "Honorary National Councilor for Mexico." This was in recognition of her overall contributions to the arts, especially in sculpture and writing.

Her sculptures have been shown in over 200 individual and group exhibitions and art auctions. This has happened over more than fifty years! She is a member of the Society for American Archaeology (SAA) and works as a research consultant at the Institute for Maya Studies in Mexico. She also helps advise the Exploring Solutions Past (ESP): The Maya Forest Alliance, which works with the El Pilar Archaeological Reserve in Belize.

Carol Miller's Personal Life

Carol Miller has lived in Mexico for a long time. She lives in Mexico City with her husband, Tomás González, who is a designer and art restorer. She has two children, Fausto and Dushka Zapata. Carol is also a naturalized citizen of Mexico. She has worked to help conserve the hairless Mexican dog breed known as the Xoloitzcuintles.
