Carolina barrio-pueblo is a special part of Carolina. It's like the main downtown area or "seat" of the municipality. In 2010, about 1,201 people lived here.
In Puerto Rico, just like in Spain, many towns have a central area called a pueblo. This area usually has a main square, the city hall, and a Catholic church. Every year, special festivals called Fiestas patronales (patron saint festivals) are held in this central square.
The Central Plaza and Its Church
The main square, or plaza, is a fun place for everyone to gather. People meet there to hang out and enjoy events from morning until night. Long ago, in the early 1800s, Spanish laws called the Laws of the Indies said that plazas should be big enough for celebrations. They also said that streets nearby should have covered walkways to protect people from the sun and rain.
Right across from the central plaza in Carolina barrio-pueblo is a Roman Catholic church called Parroquia San Fernando. This church was built between 1860 and 1870. It was designed by an architect named Antonio María Guitián. Over the years, the church has been updated and repaired many times.
History of Carolina Pueblo
Puerto Rico used to be controlled by Spain. After the Spanish–American War in 1898, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This happened because of a peace agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Puerto Rico then became a territory of the United States.
In 1899, the United States government counted the people living in Puerto Rico. They found that 2,177 people lived in Carolina Pueblo at that time.

More recently, in July 2020, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) provided money. These funds were for fixing up Carolina's main plaza.
