Carolyn W. Colvin, born on May 27, 1942, in Arnold, Maryland, is an American public administrator. She has held important roles in the United States government. She is best known for her work at the Social Security Administration. This is a government agency that helps people with retirement, disability, and other benefits.
Ms. Colvin served as the Acting Commissioner of the Social Security Administration twice. Her first time was from 2013 to 2017. She also served in this role from late 2024 to early 2025. In 2014, President Barack Obama suggested she become the permanent commissioner. The Senate Committee on Finance approved her, but the full Senate never voted on it.
Before becoming Acting Commissioner, she was the Deputy Commissioner. President Obama nominated her for this role, and the United States Senate approved her in 2010. She had also worked at the Social Security Administration in the 1990s.
Carolyn Colvin studied at Morgan State University. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration. She also received a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree. She has one son and six grandchildren.
