Carolyn B. Fluehr-Lobban (born January 6, 1945) is an American anthropologist and beekeeper. An anthropologist is someone who studies people, their cultures, and how they live. She is also a co-founder and former president of the Sudan Studies Association.

Fluehr-Lobban is an expert in Islamic law, anthropology, and ethics. She also specializes in human rights and how different cultures view the world. She has written books about Islamic societies and about race and racism. She is a retired professor of anthropology at Rhode Island College in Providence, Rhode Island. She helped start the beekeeping program there. She also teaches at the Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island. She has created scholarships at Georgia State University, Temple University, and Northwestern University. She was the secretary of the Rhode Island Beekeepers Society and often gives talks about bees. She has run for election to the New Hampshire House of Representatives three times as a member of the Democratic Party.

About Her Life

Carolyn Fluehr-Lobban earned her first two degrees, a bachelor's and a master's, in anthropology from Temple University. She then received her highest degree, a Doctor of Philosophy, from Northwestern University in 1973.

She is married to Richard Lobban, who is an archaeologist. They met while studying anthropology at Temple University. Together, they created a special award at Temple University. This award helps anthropology students with their research before they write their main thesis.

Carolyn and her husband, Richard, have also worked to protect nature. They helped set aside 170 acres of land around Newfound Lake to keep its water clean. They have given money to the Lakes Region Conservation Trust. They also joined their neighbors in protecting their own land by placing conservation easements on it. This means the land cannot be developed in the future.
