Who Was Ensley A. Carpenter?

The community of Carpenter was named after a very important person: Ensley A. Carpenter. He was the first postmaster and also a doctor in the area. Dr. Carpenter moved to Whitley County around 1868, shortly after the American Civil War. He came from a nearby place called Claiborne County, Tennessee.

Dr. Carpenter helped many people. He practiced medicine in Whitley, Bell, and Knox counties. He continued his work from the late 1860s into the early 1900s.

Where is Carpenter Located?

Carpenter is located in southeastern Kentucky. If you're looking at a map, it's southeast of a larger town called Corbin. You can find it along Kentucky Route 92. It's situated between the major highway Interstate 75 and State Route 25E.
