The Story of Carr's: How It Began
In 1831, Jonathan Carr opened a small bakery and biscuit factory. This was in the city of Carlisle in England. Just ten years later, in 1841, he received a special honor. This was a royal warrant, meaning the royal family approved of his products. Within 15 years, Carr's became the biggest baking business in Britain!
From Mill to Bakery: Making Biscuits for Travel
Carr's business was special because it had both a mill and a bakery. This meant they could grind their own flour and then bake with it. They made bread at night and biscuits during the day. The biscuits were like the dry ones sailors ate on long trips. They stayed fresh in tins and could be sent across the country by canal and train.
Standing Up for Fair Prices
Jonathan Carr was against the Corn Laws. These laws made imported wheat very expensive. This kept the price of British wheat high, which meant bread was costly even when people were hungry. Carr believed everyone should have affordable food.
Jonathan Carr passed away in 1884. By 1885, Carr's was making 128 different kinds of biscuits. The company also employed 1,000 workers!
Changes in Ownership: A Journey Through Companies
In 1894, the company became "Carr and Co. Ltd." Later, in 1908, it went back to being a private company. The part of the business that milled flour became "Carrs Flour Mills Limited." Jonathan's four sons took over, but they weren't as good at running the business. Still, the biscuit making stayed in the family.
In 1964, Carr's became part of Cavenham Foods. Then, in 1972, United Biscuits bought Carr's. They also bought other biscuit brands from Cavenham Foods. In 2014, a Turkish company called Yıldız Holding bought United Biscuits. Two years later, in 2016, all of United Biscuits' brands, including Carr's, joined with Yıldız's other snack brands to form a new company called pladis.
A Family Hero: Captain Richard Carr
A member of the Carr family, Captain Richard Carr, was a hero during the Second World War. He was a Commando and was honored for trying to escape many times from prisoner-of-war camps.
Carr's Today: Biscuits and Beyond
Since 1972, the Carr's biscuit factory has been part of United Biscuits. In the US, Kellogg's sells Carr's biscuits. The factory in Carlisle is now officially called McVitie's, but many local people still call it Carr's.
Carr's Flour Mills and Other Businesses
The original Carr's Flour Mills and its farming supply businesses grew into a separate company. This company is now called Carr's Group PLC and is still based in Carlisle. They sell flour for home baking in UK supermarkets. Carr's Group also owns companies that do light engineering work. In 2016, Carr's Group sold its flour-milling part to Whitworths Holdings Ltd.
A Change in Royal Approval
In March 2012, Carr's Table Water Biscuits lost their royal warrant. This was because the Royal Households had "changing tastes." Carr's quickly started using the coat of arms of the City of Carlisle on their packaging instead.
Facing the Floods: A Factory's Resilience
2005 Flood Challenges
In 2005, the Caldewgate factory in Carlisle was hit by a flood. This caused them to lose two months of making biscuits. But with a £1 million grant from the government, they were able to start production again.
2015 Flood and Recovery
The Caldewgate factory flooded again on December 6, 2015. The water was over five feet (more than 150 cm) deep! This flood damaged the brick ovens. It also led to a shortage of Carr's products in stores. The factory closed for a month for repairs. Production slowly started again in the spring of 2016.
