Carroll is a small village in New South Wales, Australia. It's located on the Oxley Highway, about 20 kilometers (12 miles) east of Gunnedah. In 2016, a count showed that 337 people lived in Carroll.

The Namoi River flows near the highway, which is also the main street in Carroll. Sometimes, the river floods the town and the areas around it. When this happens, the Oxley Highway has to close for a while. The land around Carroll is part of the Liverpool Plains region, known for its rich soil.

A Look at Carroll's Past

The name Carroll comes from an old Irish name, O Cearbhaill or Cearbhall. These names mean "fierce in battle."

The area where Carroll is located was first used by European settlers in the 1830s. In 1839, a man named John Howe from Windsor got a special permit to use the land for grazing animals. Later, in 1846, another part of the 'Carrol' land was used by Hannah Dight.

Famous Visitors and Local Heroes

In December 1865, a well-known Australian bush ranger called Captain Thunderbolt (whose real name was Fred Ward) visited the inn in Carroll. He and two friends spent time there before police arrived. They managed to get away, leaving behind three horses they had used for carrying things.

The land around Carroll is very good for farming. Farmers here grow crops like cotton, wheat, and other grains. They also raise animals such as fat lambs and beef cattle.

Carroll is also famous for its horses! Two amazing Olympic eventing horses, Kibah Tic-Tic and Kibah Sandstone, were born on a property near the village. Kibah Tic-Tic won two gold medals. Kibah Sandstone won a team gold medal and an individual gold medal in 1992, and another gold medal in 2000. These horses are true champions from Carroll!

Life in Carroll Today

According to the sign at the entrance to the village, there are 188 people living in the village itself. The local public school in Carroll celebrated its 150th birthday in 2019, which is a very long time! There is also a convenience store in the village where you can buy things and get fuel for your car.
