Carroll Lake is a unique lake found in Canada. It sits right on the border between the province of Manitoba and the unorganized part of Kenora District in Ontario. The lake has an interesting, irregular shape. Most of Carroll Lake is in Ontario, with only small parts reaching into Manitoba. It is part of the huge Hudson Bay drainage basin, meaning its water eventually flows into Hudson Bay.

Where is Carroll Lake Located?

Carroll Lake is mainly in Northwestern Ontario. The small parts in Manitoba are within Atikaki Provincial Wilderness Park. The larger Ontario section is inside Woodland Caribou Provincial Park. These parks help protect the natural beauty and wildlife around the lake.

How Big is Carroll Lake?

Carroll Lake is quite large! It stretches about 20 km (12 mi) long. At its widest point, it measures around 7 km (4.3 mi) across. The lake sits at an elevation of about 325 m (1,066 ft) above sea level.

Rivers and Water Flow

Carroll Lake is an important part of a large water system. Water flows into and out of it, eventually reaching the ocean.

What Rivers Flow Into Carroll Lake?

Two main rivers feed water into Carroll Lake:

  • The Haggart River, which flows into the lake from the south.
  • The Gammon River, which enters from the southeast.

Many other smaller, unnamed streams also flow into the lake.

Where Does the Water Go From Carroll Lake?

The main river flowing out of Carroll Lake is the Gammon River. This river starts its journey from the western side of the lake. From there, the water travels through a series of other rivers and lakes:

  • First, it flows into the Bloodvein River.
  • Then, it reaches Lake Winnipeg, a very large lake in Manitoba.
  • Finally, the water continues its long journey through the Nelson River all the way to Hudson Bay. This makes Carroll Lake a small but important part of a vast water network.
