Northwestern Ontario is a large region located in the Canadian province of Ontario. It covers a big part of Ontario that has a subarctic environment, meaning it has long, cold winters and short, cool summers. This region includes three main areas called districts: Kenora, Rainy River, and Thunder Bay.
Sometimes, Northwestern Ontario is grouped together with Northeastern Ontario. When these two regions are combined, they are simply called Northern Ontario.
People and Cities in Northwestern Ontario
Northwestern Ontario is the part of the province with the fewest people living in it. It is very spread out, meaning there are not many towns or cities close together. More than half of all the people in this region live in just one place: the city of Thunder Bay. Thunder Bay is the largest city and a major center for the area.
Besides Thunder Bay, Kenora is the only other city in Northwestern Ontario that has more than 10,000 people. This shows how much of the region is made up of wilderness and smaller communities.
Population Changes Over Time
The total number of people living in Northwestern Ontario has been going down over the last ten years. This is mostly because the forestry industry, which involves cutting down trees and making wood products, has faced some challenges. Many jobs in this industry have been lost.
However, even with the overall decline, some smaller towns and areas within the region have actually seen a small increase in their population. This means that while some places are shrinking, others are slowly growing.
