Carrollton's History
Carrollton got its name from the Carroll family. They were important landowners in the 1800s. The old home of the Carroll family is still standing today. You can find it where Reynolds Drive and Norsworthy Drive meet.
This old house is one of the few truly historic homes in Carrollton. It is even older than the first Carrollton Post Office. That old post office building is now used by a local heating business. It's located on Norsworthy Drive, not far from the Carroll home.
Where is Carrollton Located?
Carrollton is in the eastern part of Isle of Wight County. It's a piece of land west of the James River. It is also southeast of Smithfield. A smaller community called Bartlett is part of Carrollton.
The southern edge of Carrollton is a water area called Chuckatuck Creek. This creek separates Isle of Wight County from the city of Suffolk. Carrollton covers about 15 square kilometers (about 5.8 square miles). Most of this area is land, with a small part being water.
The Carrollton ZIP code area is larger than the CDP itself. It stretches east to the James River and west towards Benns Church. The Carrollton post office is located along Carrollton Boulevard (US-17).
Carrollton's Climate
Carrollton has a humid subtropical climate. This means it has hot, humid summers and mild winters. The average temperature in January is about 4.7°C (40.4°F). In July, it's much warmer, around 26.7°C (80.0°F).
Growing Carrollton
Carrollton has grown a lot in the past ten years. Many new businesses have opened. These include a shopping center, places to eat fast food, and medical centers. There are also banks, a farm supply store, a gym, and a hotel.
Many new homes have been built since 2001. Some of these homes are quite expensive. There are also new apartments and condominiums. For example, the Eagle Harbor neighborhood was planned a long time ago, but building only started around 2000.
The Carrollton Fire Department has also expanded. They have added more space and are the only fire department in the county that also offers emergency medical services (EMS).
Carrollton is one of the two biggest voting areas in Isle of Wight County. The other is Smithfield. More than 30,000 cars drive through Carrollton each day on the Route 17 James River Bridge. Many of these drivers are people traveling to work at Newport News Shipbuilding.
