History of Cartagena
In the 1600s, the land around Cartagena was very important for growing wheat. This wheat was then sent by ship to places like Peru and Spain from the port of Cartagena.
Later, around 1870, Cartagena became a popular place for smart and important people from Chile to live. They built holiday homes there, and it became a fashionable seaside resort. Cartagena officially became a commune in 1901.
People of Cartagena
In 2002, a count of the population (called a census) showed that Cartagena had 16,875 people living there. Most of these people, about 15,302 (or 90.7%), lived in urban areas, which means in towns or cities. The rest, 1,573 people (or 9.3%), lived in rural areas, which are more like the countryside.
The census also found that there were 8,396 men and 8,479 women in Cartagena. The people from Cartagena have special names: a man is called a Cartagenino, and a woman is called a Cartagenina.
How Cartagena is Governed
As a commune, Cartagena is managed by a municipal council. This council is led by an alcalde, which is like a mayor. The alcalde is chosen directly by the people every four years. The current alcalde is Ricardo García Tapia, who is an independent politician.
The municipal council also has several members who help run the commune. These members are:
- Jesús Cartagena García (from the Christian Democratic Party)
- David Jiménez Mira (from the Social Democrat Radical Party)
- Jaime Arriola Cortez (from National Renewal)
- Jorge Castro Retamal (from National Renewal)
- Teresa Olivares Alvarez (from the Christian Democratic Party)
- Juan Cárdenas Palacios (Independent, supporting the Party for Democracy)
Cartagena is also part of larger areas for national elections. For example, it is in the 15th electoral district for the Chamber of Deputies. This is one of the two main parts of Chile's national parliament. The representatives for this district are María José Hoffmann and Víctor Torres.
For the Senate, which is the other part of the national parliament, Cartagena is in the 6th senatorial constituency. The senators for this area are Francisco Chahuán Chahuán and Ricardo Lagos Weber.
