Carterville is a city located in Williamson County, Illinois, United States. In 2020, about 5,848 people lived there. The city is part of a larger area that includes Carbondale and Marion. Carterville has grown a lot as a place where people live who work in these nearby cities.

The city is right next to the Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge. This refuge is a huge area of land and water, covering about 44,000 acres (178 square kilometers). It is home to many different kinds of plants and animals.

History of Carterville

How Carterville Was Founded

Carterville was started by two people, George Monroe McNeill and Laban Carter. George McNeill moved to the area in 1866 with his wife, Olive Herrin. They settled on a farm that is now part of Carterville.

Laban Carter arrived in Williamson County in 1864. He bought about 100 acres (0.4 square kilometers) of land. He helped set up a post office for the town in 1871. The town was named "Carterville" in his honor.

George McNeill's Role in the Civil War

George McNeill was one of the youngest soldiers in the Union army during the American Civil War. He joined the army when he was just 16 years old. He was with General William T. Sherman during his famous "March to the Sea" through the South.

Carterville High School

Carterville High School is a highly-rated school. In 2016, U.S. News & World Report gave it a silver medal and ranked it 94th in Illinois among the nation's best high schools.

Carterville High School was the only public high school in southern Illinois that scored above the state average on the ACT test. This shows how well its students perform.

School Sports Achievements

The sports teams at Carterville Unit 5 Schools have had many successes.

  • The football team won the IHSA State Conference Championship in Class 3A in 1996.
  • The softball team won the Class 2A championship in both 2008 and 2016.
