History of Cartoon Network
In 1986, a company called Turner Broadcasting System bought a large film and TV library. This library included many old movies and cartoons. Later, in 1991, Turner also bought the cartoon studio Hanna-Barbera.
Ted Turner wanted a special TV channel to show all these cartoons. So, on March 12, 1992, The Cartoon Network, Inc. was officially created. On October 1, 1992, the Cartoon Network TV channel launched. It was the first TV channel to show cartoons 24 hours a day!
In 1994, a new part of Hanna-Barbera was formed called Cartoon Network Studios. They started making new cartoons, like What a Cartoon!. This show featured many original short cartoons. Some of these shorts became popular TV shows later on.
In 1996, Turner Broadcasting System joined with Time Warner. This meant that Warner Bros. got back some of the old cartoons they had sold before. This helped Cartoon Network make even more new shows.
The company also owns Adult Swim. This is a special programming block on Cartoon Network that airs late at night. It started on September 2, 2001, and is still a very important part of the company.
Changes in Ownership
Over the years, The Cartoon Network, Inc. has been part of different larger companies.
In 2018, AT&T, a big telecommunications company, bought Time Warner. This meant that Cartoon Network became part of AT&T.
Then, in 2022, AT&T decided to combine WarnerMedia (which included Cartoon Network) with another company called Discovery, Inc.. This big merger created a brand new company called Warner Bros. Discovery. So now, The Cartoon Network, Inc. is a part of Warner Bros. Discovery.
Global Reach
Cartoon Network quickly became popular around the world. In 1993, a version of Cartoon Network for Europe was launched. Over the years, more languages were added, like Spanish, Swedish, and French.
The channel continued to grow, launching in many different countries and regions. This included places like the Arab World, Asia Pacific, Australia, Canada, India, Italy, Japan, Latin America, and the United Kingdom. Each region often got its own version of the channel, sometimes with local languages.
This global expansion allowed children all over the world to enjoy Cartoon Network's animated shows. Other channels like Boomerang and Cartoonito also expanded internationally.
