Cartoonito is the name of two TV channels that show animated series for young children. Both channels are owned by a company called Warner Bros. Discovery EMEA.

The channel we now know as Cartoonito began as Boomerang in March 2005. It first launched in English for the Middle East and some African countries. Later, in June, it expanded to Europe, adding audio options for Polish and Hungarian viewers. A Greek audio option was added in December.

In August 2007, the channel started broadcasting to countries like Russia and the Baltic states. Some shows even had Russian audio. By 2008, Arabic and a full Polish audio option were available. In January 2010, Boomerang reached even more countries, including Romania and the Czech Republic.

In 2010, Boomerang also launched its African website. On October 12, 2011, a special version of Boomerang was created for Central and Eastern Europe. This version served countries like Poland, Hungary, and Romania. At the same time, the Cartoonito brand joined both Boomerang channels. It appeared as a special block of shows in the mornings and afternoons.

Changes Over Time

On January 14, 2015, the Boomerang channel changed its look to match other Boomerang channels around the world. It was then called Boomerang Africa. On July 1, 2016, Boomerang MENA was launched. This was a separate channel specifically for the Arab world, Greece, and Cyprus. It replaced the African channel in those areas.

Boomerang MENA had its own schedule and rules for what could be shown. It offered three audio options: English, Arabic, and Greek. Boomerang Africa also updated its picture format to widescreen on September 21, 2016. By March 4, 2019, it started broadcasting in high definition (HD).

Becoming Cartoonito (2023–Present)

In Africa, Cartoonito first appeared as a daily block of shows on Boomerang starting October 12, 2011. This block ended on January 1, 2014. However, it came back on April 4, 2022, as part of a bigger relaunch. Then, on February 8, 2023, it was announced that Cartoonito would become a full-time channel. It took the place of Boomerang on March 25.

In June 2023, it was also announced that Boomerang in the Middle East and North Africa would change its name to Cartoonito. This change happened on September 4, 2023.
