Chronology
Related shows Mr. Bean (original live-action series)

Mr. Bean: The Animated Series is a funny British cartoon show. It's also known simply as Mr. Bean. This cartoon is based on the super popular live-action TV show of the same name. Rowan Atkinson and Richard Curtis created the original show.

The animated series follows the adventures of Mr. Bean, his teddy bear named Teddy, his girlfriend Irma Gobb, and the mysterious driver of the three-wheeled car. New characters were added, like Bean's landlady, Mrs. Wicket, and her cat, Scrapper. The show was first announced in February 2001.

The first episode aired on January 5, 2002. The show originally ended on June 2, 2004. During this time, 52 episodes were made, each split into two 11-minute parts. The first two series were shown on ITV on Saturday nights. By May 2004, the show became very popular with younger viewers. So, the third series started airing daily on CITV.

In January 2014, good news arrived! The show was brought back for more episodes. Rowan Atkinson returned to voice Mr. Bean, and other voice actors came back too. The new series, with 78 episodes, started on February 16, 2015. These new episodes had more talking than the older ones, which mostly used funny sounds and mumbling.

Meet the Characters

Main Characters

Mr Bean animated characters
The series' main characters and props. From left to right: Mr. Bean, Teddy, Mrs. Wicket, Scrapper, Miss Wince, Irma Gobb and Mr. Bean's Mini.
  • Mr. Bean (voiced by Rowan Atkinson) – He's the main character of the show! Mr. Bean is a bit like a big kid. He's very focused on himself and loves to win. He lives in London and almost always wears his famous tweed jacket and a thin red tie. He often comes up with strange plans to do everyday things. In the cartoon, he talks more and seems a bit smarter than his live-action version.
  • Teddy – This is Mr. Bean's teddy bear and his best friend for life. Even though Teddy isn't alive, Bean pretends he is, just like in the original show.
  • Mrs. Julia Wicket (voiced by Sally Grace) – She is Mr. Bean's elderly and often grumpy landlady. She usually doesn't like Bean's silly actions. But deep down, she cares for him, especially in the later seasons. A funny thing she often does is scream loudly when things go wrong, which scares birds outside her flat! We learn in one episode that she dislikes Bean because he accidentally ruined her wedding when he was young.
  • Scrapper – This is Mrs. Wicket's sneaky, one-eyed pet cat. Scrapper doesn't like Mr. Bean at all, just like his owner.
  • Irma Gobb (voiced by Matilda Ziegler) – She is Mr. Bean's girlfriend. Irma first appeared in the live-action show. She is smarter than Bean, which sometimes makes their relationship a bit difficult. In the cartoon, she works at a local library.
  • Miss Mary Wince – She is Mrs. Wicket's best friend. Miss Wince often visits Mrs. Wicket for tea and to watch wrestling together.
  • Mr. Bean's Mini – This is Mr. Bean's car, a green Mini with a black hood. A running joke is that Bean locks it with a big bolt and padlock instead of the car's actual lock.
  • Reliant Regal – This is a light-blue, three-wheeled car. Another funny thing that often happens is that Mr. Bean accidentally knocks it over or crashes into it with his Mini. He usually doesn't even notice what he's done!

Other Important Characters

  • Burglars – These are two criminals, one big and one small. They are very good at disguises and commit many crimes in London. But Mr. Bean always manages to stop them, and they end up getting arrested by the police.
  • Bruiser family – They are Mr. Bean and Mrs. Wicket's next-door neighbors. This family is often seen as Bean's rivals. Sometimes the whole family appears, and other times it's just the father and son.
  • Queen Elizabeth II – She is the Queen of the United Kingdom. Mr. Bean is a big fan of hers.
  • Traffic Warden – This officer gives tickets to cars parked in the wrong places in London. Since Mr. Bean often parks his Mini illegally, she frequently gets in his way. She takes her job very seriously, even giving a ticket to a police car once!
  • Librarian – This person is Irma's boss at the library.
  • Lottie – She is Irma Gobb's teddy bear. Lottie looks just like Teddy, but she has eyelashes, a red bow, and a skirt. She is Teddy's girlfriend, but Mr. Bean usually doesn't like their relationship.
  • Mrs. Wicket's nephew – This is Mrs. Wicket's unnamed nephew. He usually plays video games at his aunt's flat.
  • Declan – He is a friend of Irma Gobb and sometimes a rival to Mr. Bean, especially when they both try to win Irma's attention.

Voice Actors

Episodes

Watching at Home

Mr. Bean: The Animated Series has been released on DVD in different parts of the world. In the United States, all 52 episodes of the first three series were available on DVD. However, in the United Kingdom and Australia, some episodes were not included on the main DVDs. This was because those few episodes had a slightly higher age rating than the others, and the creators wanted all the DVDs to have a "U" (Universal) rating, meaning they were suitable for everyone.

Games and Apps

A platform video game based on the series was released in the late 2000s. It was called Mr. Bean for PlayStation 2, Nintendo DS, and Microsoft Windows. A version for the Wii console, called Mr. Bean's Wacky World, also came out.

Many apps based on the show have been released for phones and tablets. Some popular ones include Mr. Bean: Around the World, Mr. Bean: Flying Teddy, Mr. Bean: Sandwich Stack, and Mr. Bean: Special Delivery. You can find these on iOS, Android, and Amazon devices.
